Staff Sgt. Tyler King kisses his daughter Lola goodbye while sister Bella hitches a ride after the Sept. 19, 2009 commissioning ceremony for Missouri National Guard's 203rd Engineer Battalion as the group prepares to head to Afghanistan for a one year tour.

NEWS

The Goodman Area Fire Protection District uses a training exercise to remove the old Williams’ Hardware Store – later used as the American Legion – from Main Street on May 15, 2010. The area will be turned into a park.

A Carthage man was rushed to the hospital after he tried to race the train to the crossing on April 29, 2010. The engine hit the car, shot it forward into a guardrail and it bounced back into the moving train shattering the car’s rear glass.

D & S Erectors employees lower Seneca’s pedestrian bridge onto a flatbed truck on Sept. 17, 2009. The bridge was removed so crumbling foundations could be repaired. Twin walk bridges once adorned Lost Creek but the east bridge was destroyed by floods. Volunteers believe this bridge and its decorative ironwork date to 1860.

Thai dancers entertain students at Crowder College with traditional costumes and dances from different regions of Thailand during a program on Oct. 27, 2009.

Chanti Downey and Brady Beckham round a curve during a challenge at the St. Patty’s Revenge Urban Adventure Race held in spite of the sleet March 20, 2010. The duo took first in coed teams and dubbed their team the "Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies."

Children race towards the eggs during the Crowder College PBL-SIFE sponsored Easter egg hunt on April 3, 2010. Some 7,000 eggs were hidden across the grounds of the school. Just under 300 children age 0-12 joined the egg hunt.

Roughrider Clinton Davolt goes for the ball against East Central's Ciaran Taaffe Oct. 27, 2009 in what became the first playoff win for Crowder College's fledgling program. Crowder beat visiting East Central 2-1, advancing to the Region XVI tournament semifinal.

Ethan Pogue (145) tries to wrap up a match with Hannibal’s Blake Jarman. Pogue won by major decision, 10-0, over Jarman in the Neosho home tournament championships on Dec. 5, 2009.

BACKSTORY: The frame before this the deputy was reaching for his pistol as the bear pulled up and headed for the photographer. This uncropped image was shot at 28 mm. I didn’t think about it until afterward when the MDC guys told me it was “much closer than 10-feet” and that they were about to run for it. They put him down after that.

BLOOPER SHOT

A black bear tries to move outside Neosho on Aug. 10 2010, its hind legs broken. It was hit by a Chevy 1-ton, a Jeep, then a Honda Civic, which hit the bear then flew over it.
